Chapter Fourteen

HOW HAD SHE ALLOWED Mika to talk her into this dinner with her brother and Lawrence? The cooking classes had been rocky at first, then gotten better as classes continued. Brihanna still hadn’t told anyone else about it, not her friends or family. She almost told Darrell one day knowing he would keep it a secret, but there was one problem. He would have teased her mercilessly in private and she didn’t have time for that. So it stayed her and Mika’s secret, well mostly.

Mika had to tell Robert who she was spending time with. Otherwise, he would have gone off his rocker thinking she was having some weekly affair. However, he had no clue what they were doing. Robert tried to coax it from her one evening when she dropped by, but Brihanna promptly told him to mind his business. Besides, she was pretty sure Robert thought it was some scheme his wife had cooked up, and she wasn’t going to tell him any different.

Mika was handling telling Robert about his sister’s “friend” and the dinner in general, which meant Brihanna had to deal with Lawrence. By unspoken agreement the pair tended to alternate their time at each other’s places. So the Saturday before this proposed dinner, they were laid up together on her couch when she brought up the get together.

“Law, can I ask you something?”

“Anything Baby Girl.”

Brihanna had to pause a moment, still not quite used to the ease in which they were now using their bedroom pet names in regular conversation. It wasn’t that she didn’t like it, it was just very intimate, this out in the open expression of what began as private affection. But it made her feel connected to him on a nonsexual level.

“Did you forget what you were about to say?” Lawrence probed.

“Sorry, I got distracted. I wanted to know if you had plans next Saturday?”

“Pretty sure I’m clear. I assumed I’d be spending it with you.”

“Yeah, so about that. I was hoping you wouldn’t mind going to dinner at my brother’s house. His wife invited us. I told her I’d have to ask you though...”

Lawrence sat up, taking her with him, his mind analyzing what this meant. He knew already how central of a role her brother played in her life. He’d be meeting the de facto head of her family, no doubt about it. And no matter how people tried to slice it, that usually implied a deep relationship between two people.

It was one thing to meet her friends, which some women even took that as a sign of “official togetherness”. It wasn’t that he didn’t consider them in a relationship, because he did. But meeting her brother would be defining it as “a serious one”. Was he ready for that?

“Hey,” Brihanna pinched his side. “Cat got your tongue or what?”

“Just thinking. It’ll be just your brother and wife, right?”

“Yep, just those two.”

Lawrence ran his thumb across her bottom lip so she wouldn’t bite it. A habit she had when nervous or uncertain.
